Initially, the Indonesian government discussed a higher fee, ranging from 30 to 100 USD. This would help the country weed out those tourists who “are not ready to spend and, as a rule, create many problems”, the tourism department said then. In addition, from July 2023, tourists must also pay 100 thousand rupees (6,5 USD) if they plan to go scuba diving off Nusa Penida. The government uses this money to protect the environment.
